Chapter 16:

A Friend’s Goodbye

Eri, wounded and bleeding, turned around and saw a man wearing a black ski mask and a short sword in hand. His outfit was full black, Eri looked serious and her eyes turned cat-like. She disappeared and in a blink of an eye, she’s in front of the mysterious man ready to give a strong blow with her kick. But even before she could kick him, he clutched down and ran towards Ren. He stopped in front of Ren and punched him in the stomach, took him and jumped out the window. Eri, who saw the fast event, took some big broken glass and as she follows the man, she threw them like a kunai. The glass hits the man at his leg that made him let go of Ren. Ren fell on the ground and was still suffering pain from the man’s earlier punch, another man came, taking Ren away. Eri followed the other man leaving the masked man bleeding.

The man with light brown hair and eyes puts Ren down. Their at the school rooftop near the bell tower, Eri arrived and then she fell on her knees, trying to catch her breath…
“You’re late, Shin!” Eri said.
“I’m sorry…” the man replied.
“Are you alright?” Ren asked. He seemed to have gotten over the pain.
“It’ll heal, somehow…” she answered then she stood up slowly.
“Are you the one who’s supposed to be a new student at out class?” Ren asked Shin.
“Yes… Kusanagi Shin, at your disposal, Master Ren…” he said as he bowed. Ren looked uneasy with the two’s formality towards him.
“We came here in Lady Akira’s wish!” Eri said as she stood up. “Darn, my clothes are full of holes!” she mumbled.
“You mean you’re her stead for her mission here!” Ren said.
“Please stop saying that!” Shin said softly.
Ren looked angry at the two and then Eri, who was far more angrier that him, stared at him and said,
“I can’t accept you; I won’t forgive the man that rejected my Lady! You have guts, to look at us like that!”
“Now, now, Eri… Calm down… Let me see that back of yours!”
Eri sighed and then Shin takes out a handkerchief to remove the blood from Eri’s back.
“I smell blood…” Akira said as she came down from the school’s bell tower. She’s holding some clothes and bandages, she gave them to Shin when she landed.
“Akira!” Ren stood up.
“Yo, Natsume!” she answered with a victory sign then she looked serious. She turned to Shin and asked, “How’s Chiaki?”
“She seems worried, milady!” Shin answered.
“Eri, why is Shin still here? He’s supposed to be with Chiaki, am I right?”
“Oh! I forgot! Excuse me!” Shin stepped back and disappeared. Eri puts on her new coat and looked at Akira.
Ren looked at Akira and then she looked back at him.
“What is it?” she asked with her smug smiling face.
“About yesterday…”

Inside the gym’s storage room, two figures, one is the masked man, and the other, a woman. They were talking about what happened.
“You’re such an idiot!” the woman said as she was putting some medicine on a cotton swab. She clutched down and swabbed the man’s wounds.
“I thought it would be best if I kill him since Akira’s not around!” the man said.
“The new students didn’t even give you a scare?”
The man smirked and said, “Sakurano’s alone right now…”
“It can’t be helped… I’d like to see Lady Noelle’s expression when she’s gone!”

Chiaki walks back to where she left Ren and Eri; she saw the bloody scene and shattered glasses. Suddenly, from behind someone appears. She felt his presence and turned around, the man unsheathes his sword.
“Die!” he shouted as he strikes at the defenseless Chiaki. Shin appears and pulled Chiaki to safety.
“Tohru?” Chiaki said as she takes back her balance.
“Darn it!” the man said and he removed his mask, revealing that he is Tohru.
“Chiaki!” Ren shouted as he with Akira and Eri came from behind Tohru. Tohru looked behind and with an angry face, he said.
“You and Sakurano are ruining Lady Noelle’s life!”
“Lady Noelle? Who is that?” Chiaki asked.
From the open windows, someone attacks Shin, it’s a woman, she kicked Shin away from Chiaki and stabs her on her back.
“Chiaki!!” Ren and Akira shouted.
“You don’t need to know!” the woman said and then Chiaki tried to look behind at the woman and said, “Mizue, why?” She pulled her sword off and blood gushed out of Chiaki’s stab wound! Akira looked shocked, Shin catches Chiaki and then as the woman tried to run by Akira to try and kill Ren, she stopped and suddenly coughed blood, she looked down at the hand which was stabbing her stomach. She looked up at the owner of the hand, Akira whose eyes were glowing red. Akira removes Mizue’s mask and pulled off her hand. She licked some blood of her hand and said,
“For an assassin sent by him, you sure are tasty…”
Ren ran towards the wounded Chiaki but was stopped by Tohru.
“You will die!” he said.
“Wrong…” Akira said then suddenly Tohru, dropped dead.
Akira, Ren and Eri ran towards the bleeding Chiaki.
“She was stabbed near the heart, it’s fatal, I can’t do anything from here… It’s my fault, I’m sorry!” Shin said.
“It’s not your fault!” Ren said.
“That… is right… no, one is... bla-ming you… Mister…” Chiaki said as she tried to catch her lost breath.
“Akira!” Ren turned to her with a scared face and asked, “You can save her, am I right? You can turn her to your kind, can’t you?”
“She can’t!” Eri said.
“I can’t turn her, Natsume. She’s too precious to become a monster like me. And if I do, who would supply her with blood? Only the master’s blood can quench her thirst, she’ll die if I give her my blood, and if I don’t, she’ll turn into an unstoppable monster!”
“Akira… You love… Ren-kun too… right? I can’t… hear what you… guys are talking about but… please…”
“Chiaki, please stop talking!” Akira said.
“Smile for me, always…” Chiaki closed her eyes with a smile on her face and then with her last breath, she said, “Farewell…”
“Chiaki!!” Ren called, Akira just looked down, expressionless, cold as before, tears roll down her cheek…

Chapter 17:

That Organization

The next day, the school’s atmosphere is different from its usual noisy campus. There’s no one in the halls, nobody at sight in the garden, no students roaming on the fields and no teacher inside the class room.
Everyone is in the gymnasium, all lined up. Everyone looked disciplined; even the delinquents’ usual untied tie is fixed neatly.
Up front, Akira was giving a speech with her usual cold self. Saying the words like her voice was being taken away from her. She’s sad though everyone didn’t even see her cry.
“…she was my best friend!” she said.
Ren looks at her from his line; everyone can tell he cried all night. His eyes were a bit swollen. He looks down and again starts to cry.
Eri and Shin watches over him, looking worried and sad.
“I never thought he’s a crybaby!” Shin said.
“He’s not, he’s crying for Lady Akira…” Eri said.
“A proxy?” Shin said then looked at Akira. “She’s good at acting…”
“Shut up!”

Akira finished her speech and moved away from the microphone. She bows and leaves the stage.
Everyone was dismissed. The rich kids were complaining, saying ‘why should they mourn for that girl?’ and that she’s a ‘nobody’. Others were acting concerned though they don’t really care at all. They’re just happy that the classes were suspended because of her death.

At the girl’s bathroom, the faucet on one of the sinks was on. Akira was washing her hair, she must be crying, she must be not. She hopes that the water washes away the sadness. She hopes that someone will tell her that everything will be just fine. She hopes that she wasn’t a vampire… so that that man couldn’t have done that. So that she never met Chiaki and she could have lived a happy life with Ren. Akira knows that Chiaki will have that guts to confess even without her.
“I’m sorry, Chiaki…” she mumbled. “I took away your happiness!” She pulled away her head from the faucet making the water go up and splash on the stall doors and the floor. Her hair was dripping wet, her coat was getting wet.
“I’ll kill you… Caine!” she said with an angry expression.

Ren was at the garden, being followed by Eri and Shin. He’ll cry and stop and later would cry again. He sat on the bench, looking miserable. Eri just watched as this man buries himself in depression.
“Thank you…” she said.
Ren was surprised at what Eri said, then he just continued crying, cry for Akira couldn’t.

Knowing that the day was gloom because of Chiaki’s death. Everyone was curious as to why Mizue and Tohru aren’t at school. The headmaster said that the Mizue transferred and Tohru was to be home-schooled. As expected from the headmaster, he patched things up already.

Ren was wiping his tears away; Eri was sitting at the far end of the bench. Shin was just looking around then he noticed Akira. Her hair was on a ponytail, she removed her coat. Her sleeves were rolled up a bit and she was approaching the group. She was just walking then she started to run and when she reached them, she punched Shin at his cheek. Eri stood up surprised and looking at Shin. Ren was surprised as well.
“Damn it!!!” she shouted.
“L-Lady?” Shin was surprised.
Eri checked on Shin and asked if he’s alright. Shin looked at her and said, “If she was serious, my jaw should be dislocated right now, and I should be unconscious but this punch, it’s like –“
Shin looked at Akira and said, “—like that of a normal girl.” He continued.
“My brother just declared war!” Akira said.
“Your brother?” Ren asked.
“Anyway, we should get going, milady!” Eri said as she stood up, “To the funeral.”

They arrived at Chiaki’s funeral all dressed up in black. They all entered and Chiaki’s mother, Satchiko, noticing Akira stood up, ran towards her and hugged her.
“My sweet daughter is gone! My sweet Chiaki…” she said as she was crying.
“I’m sorry…” Akira said and hugged Satchiko tight. “I’m sorry!!”
Eri looked around and noticed a small Chiaki, no; it was Chiaki’s younger sister Chiko, looking angry at the group. Eri noticed she was alone and that Akira and the others were already paying their respects to the dead. She looked back at Chiko but she was already walking towards her.
“You!” she called as she stopped in front of Eri.
“What is it?” Eri asked.
“Tell your friends that I’d like to talk to them, especially to Akira-neechan!” she said, “I’ll be waiting by the tree at the park, Akira-neechan knows of it!” then she left.
Eri watched as Chiko left and then she followed the others so that she could pay her own respect to Chiaki.

At the park, Chiko sits on the bench by a cherry blossom tree. She looked up and sees Akira and company arriving. She stood up and said, “You’re a good messenger!” to Eri.
“You’re quite arrogant to order me around young Chiko…” she replied.
The group finally reached Chiko and then with a serious glare, Akira asked, “So, what are your questions?”
“How’d you know I’ll ask you some questions? Don’t mind, anyway, I just want to know—” Chiko hesitated to continue then she shook her head and with a determined look on her face she looked at Akira straight on her eyes.
“I want to know what really happened! I know my mother is lying to me, it’s not just an accident, right?!”
Akira bent down and pats Chiko’s head as she smiled.
“Your sister, Chiaki got killed by assassins sent by my brother!” she said directly.
“Milady!” Eri was surprised and worried.
“The brother that I hate… He even tried to kill me! Should that man be called a brother?” she said with an angry tone of voice.
Ren and Eri were speechless.
“Akira…” Ren called. “What do you mean?”
“My brother and his band of monsters, huh? They think that Chiaki and also Ren are just –“
“Please don’t say it!” Chiko said the Akira looked calm.
“Alright… I won’t say anymore…” she pats her head again and continued, “Here’s all I can assure you. Your sister’s murderers are dead! Revenge has been taken—“ she looked down and with her softest voice she added, “—now I walk on the path of darkness with my bloodstained hands.”
“I see…” Chiko looked down, and some tears were flowing out her eyes. “I see!”
Chiko ran away and left the group in curiosity.
“What an ungrateful young girl…” Shin said.
“Shut up!” Eri warned.
“What does your brother think we are?” Ren asked. Akira shook her head and then she remembered his words:

“—I shall protect you! I won’t let them touch you!”

Akira raised her hand and held her forehead.
“My brother knows that you’re that one and that he wants you to die. He’s an overprotective idiot who’d do things without my permission—“
“I don’t think—“ Ren said.
“No, Ren. He’s the demon, he sent me to sleep that almost killed me!” Akira said with her clenched fist. “I’ll tell you, I can remember it as if it just happened yesterday!”
